Academic discovery and innovation prioritize rapid dissemination of findings - especially because these are often funded by grants from the public sector and non-for-profit entities. However, maximizing their real world impact requires an understanding of the patenting and intellectual property implications, otherwise breakthroughs will forever be (just) journal articles. You will learn more about how to navigate the invention disclosure and patenting process and the resources and contacts on campus to help you maximize the impact of your work!
